Moon Cycles 101

This weekend we have the first New Moon of this astrological year. You may have heard me mention the New or Full moon before - the lunar cycle is an important tool I look to for life and business and today I’m going to explain exactly why.

Why attune to the Moon?

While New and Full Moon circles have been made more popular (or perhaps more accepted) in recent years, people have been worshiping, celebrating and planting according to the Moon for centuries.

The Moon is one of many natural cycles that we can learn to lean into. I love attuning to the phases of the moon because they provide easy, visible reminders of our own natural cycles. They give us specific times where it’s most opportune to vision, plant seeds, execute, reflect and release.

Here are the four main phases of the moon and what they’re best for:

New Moon = New Beginnings, New Emotional Stories, New Ideas

When the Moon is New the night sky is at its darkest. This is the best time to go in, to get quiet and clear on what you might want to focus on for the month ahead.

Waxing Moon = Set Intentions, Refine + Hone, Clarity Builds

As the Moon begins to grow in light (waxing phase), clarity builds. This period is great for getting more specific with your goals and intentions. You may want to share your dreams with those closest to you during this time for feedback.

Full Moon = Points of Release, Culmination, Illumination, Begin to Shed

The Full Moon is when there’s the most light in the night sky. I like to think of the bright Moon as shining a spotlight on anything that has been going on during the past cycle. This phase is best for sharing, launching and celebrating, or having big “ahas”. It’s often the most high energy time (read: insomnia!).

Waning Moon = Let go, Surrender, Wrap up, Reflect

As the light from the Moon begins to wane, we begin the cycle of reflection and release. This phase is prime for wrapping up projects, surrendering and letting go of what may be no longer serving you.

You can tune into the Moon at any time of the month, but many folks choose to do some sort of ritual on the New and Full Moons.

Here are some general practices for both the New and Full Moons:

  • Charge your crystals in the moonlight (put them out on a windowsill)

  • Longer meditation

  • Journaling time

  • Clear your space (both by cleaning up and burning a clearing wood or incense)

  • Salt bath

  • Anything that allows you to connect with yourself and your intuition

The first New Moon of the astrological year is in the sign of Aries (our most powerful initiator of the zodiac) and as such it’s a perfect time for going in and asking yourself:

What do I want to do, shift or achieve in the year to come?
What have I learned is really important to me and for my life?
Is there anything specific I want to focus on bringing to fruition in the month ahead?
